The Opportunity The serology unit principally uses antibody detection methods to assist in the diagnosis of a diverse and comprehensive range of viral, bacterial, parasitic and autoimmune diseases.
There is a range of manual, semi- and fully-automated methods in use, which include ICT, IHA, Flocculation, IIF, ELISA, Multiplex / Luminex, LIA and RIA. Automated digital microscopy is expected to be added to the list in 2025. This position comprises 24 hr rostered shifts Monday - Sunday.
Important Skills You should be a registered Medical Laboratory Scientist and hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate.
The preferred candidate will have a formal qualification in the subject of diagnostic Immunology and at least 2 years practical experience within the speciality.
A significant component of the work uses indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) methodology and applicants will be expected to detail their experience and expertise using this technique.
Apart from the IIF methodology, applicants must be able to showcase their practical experience using a range of manual, semi-automated and fully automated methods for serological (antibody) diagnostic testing.
The role requires good communication skills and a strong knowledge of analytical and quality processes. You must have an attention to detail with a strong focus on quality together with a can-do attitude to work in a fast-paced and busy environment.
Key personal skills we are looking for in candidates are those who (a) are adept at task-switching (b) can remain focused on tasks when under pressure and (c) are comfortable in a work environment that can demand high flexibility.
