Mo matou | About us

"Ko nga tangata, te matua mahi - Putting people at the heart of all we do"

Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. It weaves the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into its regional divisions and district offices, ensuring continuity of services in the health system.

As an organisation we deliver health services to the almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles by ensuring our partnership with Maori are at the forefront of all our conversations.

Mo te tunga | About the role

The Christchurch Dermatology Department is accepting applications for a Complex Medical Dermatology Fellowship year on the South Island of New Zealand. Public dermatology in New Zealand is almost exclusively complex medical dermatology.

This one-year, non-ACGME-accredited fellowship provides unique exposure and experience managing complex dermatologic conditions with direct supervision provided by U.S., British and New Zealand trained dermatologists. The fellowship director is a board-certified U.S. dermatologist. The uniqueness of our fellowship is that the participant will learn to manage complex conditions under the constraints of a national public health system. The participant will become expert at using conventional immunosuppressants, and managing their side effects and complications. The participant will gain expertise managing immunobullous disease, pyoderma gangrenosum, hidradenitis suppurativa, connective tissue diseases, skin lymphomas, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, inpatient dermatology, and extensive phototherapy (UVA, UVB, and PUVA).

Dermatology at Christchurch Hospital provides expert dermatology care to more than one-half of the population of the South Island. Participants will regularly attend an outreach clinic on the West Coast. Participants will attend and regularly present at biweekly academic afternoons with colleagues in Auckland as well as biweekly histopathology sessions to discuss clinicopathologic correlations of unique cases. The participant will be expected to present at the national dermatology conference in New Zealand. The fellowship has no evening or weekend call. The participant will have plenty of opportunities to explore New Zealand.

The ideal participant will have completed their dermatology residency by the fellowship start date (estimated August 1, 2024) and must be board-eligible or board-certified.
