Media & Communications Manager - New Zealand Olympic Committee The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) is an independent, charitable organisation responsible for providing support and resources to enable New Zealand athletes to achieve at the highest levels of their sport and to excel at Olympic, Commonwealth and Youth Games. The NZOC is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) as the representative body in New Zealand responsible for developing, promoting, and protecting Olympic and Commonwealth sport in this country as well as having responsibility for the selection and organising of New Zealand teams to Olympic, Commonwealth and International Youth Games.
Reporting to the Communications Director, the Media & Communications Manager will have primary responsibility to:
Lead and implement New Zealand Olympic Committee's organisational, media and stakeholder communications strategies. This includes a focus on internal and external communications, media relations and written content generation.
Lead and/or manage the development of communications strategies and media operations for Elite, Youth and other pre-elite games and play a pivotal role in the management and implementation of all Games communications strategies and media operations.
This role is also responsible for managing the Communications Executive, providing support and guidance to ensure alignment with New Zealand Olympic Committee's communications objectives, fostering their professional growth, and delegating tasks that enhance productivity.
Key activities will include:
Manage the NZOC's organisational and stakeholder communications.
Develop and implement communication strategies with the Communications Director.
Ensure all communications align with organisational strategy.
Lead communications within NZOC's strategic focus areas.
Manage the production of National Sports Organisation (NSO), stakeholder, and athlete communications.
Coordinate materials for NZOC publications and reports.
Manage the athlete engagement communication strategy in consultation with the Athlete Engagement Manager.
Prepare briefing documents on public interest matters with the Communications Director.
Develop and implement communication strategies related to government, sport affairs and policy.
Manage the NZOC's relationship with domestic and international media.
Develop and implement editorial media strategies to promote New Zealand Olympic Committee strategic objectives and campaign messaging, inclusive of organisational media opportunities, releases, press conferences, PR and VNRs.
Develop and implement editorial media strategies (both off-line and on-line) to promote sports and athletes in the build-up to and during Olympic and Commonwealth Games, inclusive of media opportunities, releases, press conferences, PR and VNRs.
Implement messaging strategy and create and manage interview opportunities for New Zealand Olympic Committee spokespeople.
Provide media training, media support and advice to assist the New Zealand Olympic Committee, member sports or Games teams.
Develop and deliver games time media operations and press attaché team activities in collaboration with Communications Director.
Establish and manage strong relationships with the IOC and CGF Media Operations Teams.
Develop and implement comprehensive media operations plans to facilitate the athlete/media interface at Olympic, Commonwealth Games and pre elite Games.
Manage New Zealand media accreditation for Olympic and Commonwealth Games and ensure accredited media including rights holders, non-rights holders, journalists and photographers understand the rules around their accreditation and news access rules.
Play a critical management role at games time across media operations and media relations.
Work with NSOs to develop positive stories and gain athlete support and buy-in for campaign activation.
Lead NSO Communications engagement and gatherings.
Actively maintain and foster positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
Actively grow and maintain positive and engaging relationships with representatives of the media and associated outlets.
This is an integral role within the Communications team. To secure this role, you must have at least six years' experience in the media and communications industry together with experience gained in Olympic and major international sports events. You'll be skilled in connecting with diverse audiences and adjusting personal style to effectively communicate and inspire across different channels and contexts. Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, including but not limited to reports, media releases and speech writing are essential. You'll have previously managed and inspired staff and, ideally, have prior experience working with government agencies and regulatory bodies.
Candidates must be able to travel locally and, when required, internationally. The role is Auckland based, located at the New Zealand Olympic Committee's Parnell office.
