About the role
Jump on board our deep-water fleet, a league of 12 fishing vessels operating year-round from Cape Reinga to the Ross Sea. Our deep-sea vessels can be at sea for up to 12 weeks at a time, catching, processing, and packaging seafood onboard, delivering the finest New Zealand seafood to tables worldwide.
As the Marine Engineer, you will have the opportunity onboard one of Sanford's 23m Scampi Vessels, where you will be responsible for managing and maintaining the mechanical and electrical performance of the vessel's various engineering systems, supporting the Skipper and wider team to produce quality New Zealand seafood.
The vessel is located in Timaru and has a strong value led culture, where people are the operations most important asset. This is an Independent Contractor role on a 6 weeks on - 6 weeks off rotation.
Responsibilities:
Ensure optimal functioning of all marine engineering systems, including diesel-electric engines and electric trawl winches, through regular maintenance and repairs.
Ability to troubleshoot, quickly identify and resolve technical issues to ensure smooth operations during long fishing voyages.
Work to maximise fuel efficiency and minimise the vessel's environmental impact.
Maintain and enforce health and safety protocols for all engineering operations, ensuring machinery is regularly inspected and compliant with maritime safety standards.
About you:
MEC-5 Certification or equivalent
Proficiency in marine engineering systems, with extensive experience in diesel-electric systems and trawl winches is preferred.
Proven track record in maintaining and repairing marine vessels, with ammonia and other refrigerant based freezing systems ensuring their operational readiness for extended periods at sea.
An understanding and compliance to all relevant NZ legislation including MOSS, HSWA, Fisheries Act / regulation and MPI food safety.
Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently, even in challenging and remote environments.
