Mo te tunga | About the Role
Te Mana Ora (formerly Community & Public Health) provides public health services to people living throughout Canterbury and the West Coast. This new role is a Maori Environmental Health Advisor in our Christchurch based Health Protection Team. The team is involved in a broad range of environmental and communicable disease issues, alcohol harm reduction and emergency planning.
As a Maori Environmental Health Advisor you will develop and help implement projects with a Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity focus, along with engaging with Mana Whenua. Key activities include:

Building and maintaining relationships with Iwi and Maori providers.
Providing direction and support to staff to ensure a kaupapa Maori equity lens is applied to meet the needs of Maori.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and working towards equitable health outcomes. In this role, you will be responsible for:

Building and maintaining effective relationships with Iwi, Papatipu Runanga and key Maori organisations.
Participating in the design and implementation of programmes that will impact positively on Maori whanau and environments.
Supporting and monitoring the Protection team to ensure the needs of Maori are at the centre of Protection Team work.
Linking in with other Kaimahi Maori working in the National Public Health Service in the Te Mana Ora districts (Waitaha, South Canterbury, Te Tai Poutini), Te Waipounamu and nationally.

Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and Experience

A relevant degree level qualification or extensive experience of working with whanau, hapu, iwi, Maori organisations and Maori communities.
Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to work in a bi-cultural manner.
Established links with Ngai Tahu.
Understanding of and competency in Tikanga and Te Reo.
Experience or passion for working with Iwi Maori.
Commitment to improving environmental outcomes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Current driver's licence.

Desirable:

Qualification/experience working in Public Health/Health Promotion.
Qualification and/or experience in community-based projects.
