Position Overview: We are seeking a passionate and skilled Maori Environmental Advisor to join our team. This role is essential in bridging the gap between traditional Maori knowledge and contemporary environmental management. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the Resource Management Act (RMA), local government processes, planning, policy, and consenting, with a deep respect for Matauranga Maori and Tikanga.
Key Responsibilities:
Policy Development and Advice: Provide expert advice on environmental policy and planning, ensuring alignment with Ngai Tahu values and legislative requirements.
Resource Management: Navigate and influence resource management processes, including consent applications and compliance, integrating Matauranga Maori into decision-making.
Consultation and Engagement: Engage with iwi, hapu, and other stakeholders to gather input and build relationships that foster collaboration and mutual understanding.
Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of environmental strategies and plans that reflect Ngai Tahu aspirations and environmental goals.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that environmental management practices comply with relevant legislation, including the Resource Management Act, and advocate for policies that protect and enhance natural resources.
Cultural Expertise: Apply knowledge of Tikanga Maori and Matauranga Maori to inform and guide environmental practices and policies.
Key Requirements:
Experience: Demonstrated experience in environmental management, planning, or policy development, with a specific focus on the Resource Management Act, local government processes, and environmental consenting.
Cultural Competence: Understanding of Te Ao Maori and Tikanga, with the ability to integrate these principles into contemporary environmental practices and regulatory processes.
Education: Relevant tertiary qualifications in Environmental Management, Science, Planning, Law, or a related field. Additional training or certification in Matauranga Maori is highly desirable.
Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with iwi, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
