You will provide strategic leadership and management of academic and operational aspects of programmes within the areas of Education, Outdoor and Environmental Education, and Sustainability. You'll work with a team of dedicated and passionate academic and operational staff who are experienced educators in the field, to ensure the smooth running of the programmes. Leadership and management of the team is the core function of this role.
The role expectations include strategic leadership of programmes to ensure they continue to grow and develop with attention to industry and sector relevance, research informed practice, and high levels of academic and teaching quality. An appreciation for experiential learning and the important place of outdoor education in Aotearoa New Zealand alongside a commitment to sustainability and honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi is fundamental to this role. It is also expected that you will facilitate a participative management model by engaging colleagues in decision making and distributing some management or leadership functions as appropriate.
The Outdoor Education and Sustainability portfolio includes programmes at levels of certificate and diploma, Bachelors degree, and postgraduate Masters. Leading a culture of research informed teaching is an important expectation of degree and postgraduate delivery. Experience in research or the skills to promote research in the team is preferable and research time could be negotiated as part of the role.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience in leading and managing high performing teams, preferably in the tertiary and/or vocational education sectors
Experience in developing a thriving team culture and maintaining positive working relationships with all stakeholders
Experience in managing complex demands of people and events in educational contexts, including safety management systems
Sufficient academic and educational background to support strategic development of courses and programmes to meet the needs of industry and future graduates
Able to competently plan, budget, negotiate, manage and be accountable for resources and resource deployment and utilization to achieve required outputs and outcomes
Active research interests related to the broad area of sustainability, along with demonstrated experience in applying sustainability in practice and facilitating high quality learning and teaching in tertiary contexts
Recognition of the importance of honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, in all aspects of the role.
A commitment to Sustainability
A tertiary degree qualification, preferably at postgraduate level, or actively progressing to achieving such a qualification
Preferably a qualification in education, teaching, or adult teaching (completed or in progress)

The Outdoor Education and Sustainability Programmes (SOEP) consists of a unique suite of qualifications from level 3 to level 9. There are 12 full and part-time staff working across the programmes. The SOEP sits within the Department of Humanities alongside other programmes in Te Reo and Matauranga Maori, Teacher Education, English Language, Early Childhood Education, and Bridging and Foundation Studies. The successful candidate will also work alongside other managers and the Head of Department in the Humanities Leadership Team.
