Auckland Transport Operation Centre (ATOC) is a joint venture between Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency which works behind the scenes to ensure our network keeps moving and that whoever uses it has a safe and efficient journey.
Based at Smales Farm, ATOC is a 24/7 operation responsible for real-time monitoring of the network for both planned and unplanned events, ensuring the right responses are made in a timely manner to deliver safe journeys for our customers. Additionally, this centre is the eyes and ears of the urban and highway 'One Network', monitoring a total of over 11,000km of state highways, alongside the Waka Kotahi Wellington Transport Operation Centre (WTOC).

As a key member of ATOC's Senior Leadership Team (SLT), you will actively contribute to the overall management, culture, and performance for ATOC by leading and managing the Operations team to monitor, respond to, and reduce the impact of planned and unplanned events on customer journeys; optimising journeys in real time and providing travel information across all modes within the transport system.
Incident and emergency response management and coordination is a core function of ATOC, 24/7. On occasion, the severity and/or scale of those incidents and emergency events may require escalation to a higher level of response, which is beyond business-as-usual capability. In these situations, this role is expected to take a key lead position in the Incident Management Team. This may require a change in work location and/or hours.
Crucial to this role is a high degree of relationship building and management across a wide range of key internal and external stakeholders, including emergency services, NZ Police, Auckland council, contractors, developers, and the general public.
A highly experienced leader with significant operational and/or management experience in traffic and/or transport operations environment in a large, complex organisation. You will demonstrate expertise in emergency management, developing and implementing response strategies, coordinating with key stakeholders, and ensuring operational readiness during critical incidents.
Our ideal candidate will have:
Proven experience in leading, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders.Experience in budget management, including planning, monitoring, and optimising financial resources to meet operational goals and ensure cost-effective performance.An understanding of the transport system network policy, processes and statutory requirements particularly within the Government context is preferred.Ability to manage independently with governance-level direction.Strong leadership capability and drive a positive culture and values both within the direct team and wider organisation.Personal resilience.
