The Maritime Inspections Team (MIT) aims to protect New Zealand waters by ensuring large New Zealand and foreign flagged vessels meet safety, security, environmental protection and maritime international labour standards. The team also plays a key role in supporting healthy and safe outcomes on Ports. The Team's work includes:
A dedicated and ongoing focus on compliance with domestic and international conventions by both NZ and internationally flagged ships travelling in and out of NZs waters, Supporting HSWA work at Ports in partnership with the General Regulatory Operations teams Port State Control (PSC) and Flag State Control (FSC ) inspections and Safety Management System (ISM) audits, supports related investigations, and Provides input to the updating of PSC and FSC related strategies, policies and practices. Te tunga | The role We have two new Manager Maritime Inspections roles reporting to the General Manager Maritime Inspections. One will be based in Wellington (preferred) or Christchurch and the other Tauranga or Auckland. The Manager is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to a dedicated, highly respected and skillful team of Maritime Inspectors. You'll ensure that every team member knows the purpose of their role, what they need to deliver and when, and has the required capabilities to ensure the highest levels of safety, pollution prevention, security and labour standards of our local and visiting international ships.
You'll support effective relationship engagement and compliance at Ports and harm prevention programmes while building and maintaining effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. This role has an operational component as well so depending on the nature and your level of training and experience, you may also perform a range of other compliance, audit, inspection or investigative functions as required . Proven experience and knowledge or a demonstrable understanding of Port State and Flag State control inspections, relevant international frameworks, including ISM for convention vessels; Deep expertise as a regulator and regulatory operational delivery in a maritime environment; Proven track record of leading and building highly engaged teams with a safe, trusting and enabling culture, managing performance and supporting people to succeed; Ability to network effectively in a consultative and collaborative manner, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders both internally and externally; Proven ability to engage others in a vision and lead and implement transformation; Strong people leadership skills with an empathetic approach and a passion for developing others; Flexibility to travel when required. We have one role based in Wellington or Christchurch , and one role based in Tauranga or Auckland . This role is permanent, full time with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week and has a salary range of $136,555 - $166,900.
