Korero mo te Turanga | About the Role
The work of the Science Group at Environment Canterbury consists of providing environmental monitoring, data, research and advice to internal and external customers.
Te Science Group plays a key role in informing decision making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the General Manager – Environmental Monitoring and Data, this newly created role will plan, design, and lead the delivery of environmental monitoring that enables the organisation to deliver to its core services. You'll monitor programmes aligned with each other to provide an integrated view of the environment, and ensure programmes are efficiently run and cost effective.
As a Senior Leader you'll contribute strong technical leadership capability, strategic thinking, coupled with a governance mindset. Equally key is the ability to build trusted and enduring partnerships and lead and develop your team, balancing the fiscal responsibility and providing advice to council and Executive Leadership Team.
You'll develop a team culture and contribute to the ongoing development of your people | kaimahi, whilst creating a clear vision, inspiring innovation and new ways of working including connecting with our Treaty partner, Ngai Tahu, to ensure understanding of Ngai Tahu aspirations and priorities to inform work programme development and prioritisation.
Based in Christchurch, the indicative annual salary range is $144,000-$167,000 for a 40-hour week, Monday to Friday inclusive.
Mou About You
You'll bring skills and capability in the following:

Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in a discipline that includes a strong component of environmental monitoring
Not less than ten years practical experience including management of environmental monitoring teams/projects
Excellent knowledge of the work involved in environmental monitoring used in resource management
Experience leading teams and projects involving environmental monitoring
Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
Proven ability to establish stakeholder relationships and influence leaders at a senior level across local government, industry, consultants, and communities
Financial management expertise, including risk management, budgets, fiscal plans and forecasting skills
Proven ability to develop and nurture strong relationships with staff/ kaimahi, stakeholders and tangata whenua, and influence senior leaders across the organisation
Understand the health and safety and risk obligations that rest with this position and have experience in maintaining a safety focused culture where health, safety and wellbeing are at the heart of decision making
Experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and developing people leaders, supporting them to create a high performing and engaged workforce
Experience in leading changing, inspiring innovative thinking, influencing behaviour change, and adoption of new ways of working
