The Whakapapa whanau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area. In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola. Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding region, some even third or fourth generation.
Mo te tunga | About the role
Lift Mechanics are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ski area lifts, as well as the additional equipment and systems that contribute toward our ability to move and transport our guests up the mountain terrain.
Key responsibilities include:
Daily lift servicing and pre-start checks
Scheduled maintenance and repairs
Troubleshooting and problem solving
Strip down and rebuild servicing, overhauling and maintaining lift systems and components
Keep all lifts and associated components in optimum condition
Upgrading and replacing parts with new technology and systems

You don't need specific lift mechanic experience to be successful in this role and we're looking for people with a trade background that can transfer their skills to the ski industry. Ideally, you'll bring a mix of the following skills, qualifications and attributes:
Trade qualification; diesel, petrol, marine, avionics or engineering
Previous lift maintenance or lift operating experience is an added bonus
Experience working at heights, including the use of relevant abseil and safety equipment
Broad knowledge of maintenance-related skills
The ability to take the initiative and work unsupervised when required
The ability to effectively organise and manage a range of priorities
We recognise that our industry is pretty specialised so you don't need to prove that you meet the criteria 100%. Remuneration range – $26 - $42 per hour depending on experience.
