Hillmorton High School is a diverse urban coeducational school situated in the South-West of Christchurch. The school is a fast growing Y7–13 school with dedicated middle and senior schools. We have a roll of around 1300 and with further building works underway, the roll is expected to increase in the next few years. We provide students with a caring and supportive environment, to help them achieve academic excellence, leadership skills and a love of learning.
The role We are seeking Learning Assistants to support the progress, engagement and achievement of akonga at Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka, both in the classroom and tracking in the outdoor environments during break times across the school with young people from year 7 to year 13. Working with neurodiverse akonga throughout the school, the Learning Assistant will use strategies and interventions to support akonga with their self-regulation, sensory processing and ability to access the curriculum.
We have four Learning Assistant positions available starting 28 January 2025. Two of these positions are permanent and two are fixed-term positions for 1 year in 2025. Please note the two fixed term positions will end on 13th December 2024. Applicants looking for part-time hours will be considered.
The positions are term-time only and the hours of work are 27.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 9:00am - 3:00pm.
Remuneration is based on the Support Staff (Teacher Aide) in Schools Collective Agreement.
The Learning Assistant will:
be working with a number of neurodiverse akonga across the timetable under adult supervision but sometimes independently build trusting relationships with akonga assist akonga to stay on task and build self-management strategies and increased independence record information about akonga and their work as required by kaiako and/or SENCO contribute to the Student Support team through clear communication and building positive relationships with colleagues. preserve confidentiality for staff, akonga and their whanauattend meetings when necessary Qualifications and Experience The successful candidates will be someone who enjoys working with teenagers, is approachable, engaging, warm, empathetic, enthusiastic, motivated, culturally responsive, celebrates diversity and uses their initiative.
Qualifications, training and/or experience in working with students with special educational needs is preferredLearning Assistant experience is not necessary but preferredOutdoor Education or numerical experience / qualifications an advantageApplicants will be required to undergo police vetting and cannot be appointed until a successful result has been received.
