If so, this role of Kaihautu: Director Strategic Maori Partnerships could be for you!This role is designed to provide strategic leadership to the organisation, including Elected Members and the Executive Leadership Team, and to foster the development of strong, meaningful partnerships with iwi, hapu, and whanau. A key focus of the position is to enhance the cultural competency and confidence of the organisation, ensuring it is a reliable and effective partner in delivering plans and projects.As part of the Executive Team, this role will contribute to shaping and implementing the Long-Term Plan and other strategic initiatives, aligning with the priorities of the Whakatane District Council, the wider sub-region, and the overall prosperity and well-being of the District. Key responsibilities include:Driving the implementation of Te Toi Waka Whakarei - Maori Relationships Strategy in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, strengthening Council's ability to be a trusted friend and Treaty partner. Offering strategic advice to the Chief Executive, Council, and key committees on matters concerning iwi, hapu, and Maori relationships, as well as on project and strategy execution.Actively engaging with Mana Whenua and the broader Maori community in the Whakatane District to ensure the effective delivery of Council strategies, policies, and plans.Oversee and track iwi/hapu protocol agreements and management plans, addressing issues that may affect the relationships between Council, Mana Whenua, and the wider Maori community of the Whakatane District.Ko wai koe | About youThe background required for this role includes:A tertiary qualification in a related field such as Maori Development, Public Policy, or other relevant discipline.Strong standing in the Maori community with a high-level knowledge of te ao Maori me ona tikanga.Competent in Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga - ability to apply in the settings of Local Government and when interacting with Iwi and Hapu at place.A thorough understanding of the Crowns legislative and relationship responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.Excellent written and verbal communicator with the ability to confidently articulate concepts in Te Reo and English.Proven experience and ability to lead, manage and deliver strategy and bicultural development programmes from planning to successful completion.Proven ability to work successfully with iwi, hapu, whanau, and Maori landowners.
