155 Whare Awhina, based in Whangarei, takes a whanau ora integrated approach to supporting our community. We provide a wide range of services, including Community Law, Whanau Support, Housing Navigation, Housing First, Open Arms Day Centre, Social Supermarket, Food Rescue, and Community Development. The Role:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, community-minded person to join our 155 Whare Awhina team as Kaiawhina (Cook) at Open Arms, our centrally located community hub. In this role, you will provide nourishing meals and help maintain a welcoming, safe environment for our Whanau, supporting their immediate needs and connecting them to wider 155 Whare Awhina services.
Type: Permanent, full-time (6 hours per day, Monday to Friday)
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and serve nutritious meals for our Whanau, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
Ensure the kitchen is organised and clean, strictly following food safety standards.
Plan, follow, and adapt menus as needed; manage supplies and stock.
Lead and guide volunteers working in the kitchen.
Maintain cleanliness in communal areas, including bathrooms and laundry spaces.
Communicate effectively within the team and complete incident reports as needed.
What You Bring:
A compassionate, community-focused nature with a strong sense of initiative and commitment to manaakitanga.
Ability to lead and inspire a team of volunteers in a kitchen setting.
Experience managing a semi-commercial kitchen and cooking for large groups (50+ people).
Physical fitness to handle daily kitchen and cleaning tasks, including a final deep clean at the end of each shift.
A commitment to upholding whanaungatanga and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all interactions.
