The OpportunityVAST is seeking an experienced Intermediate Biologist to provide science-based and project management leadership to a diverse array of wildlife, terrestrial and wetland habitat, and vegetation assessment programs and studies.
This position is based in Cranbrook, but we welcome applicants from the surrounding communities and the Nelson area.
Your ResponsibilitiesImplementing and assisting in field environmental programs, encompassing general wildlife surveys, nesting bird sweeps and monitoring, bat surveys and monitoring, herptile capture and relocation;Conducting field site inspections related to mining and industrial activities;Collecting, managing, and analyzing data, in addition to report writing on wildlife sensitivities;Providing technical wildlife support to collaborative project teams;Supporting additional disciplines within VAST's environmental team, such as water quality monitoring, fish and aquatic projects, and invasive/rare plant programs;Working collaboratively within VAST's environmental team and building strong working relationships to support all aspects of project implementation;Contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere, building on VAST's culture of teamwork, fun, professionalism and cooperation within the office and field environments.Our Ideal CandidateA BSc or MSc in biology or an equivalent field;Relevant experience with wildlife biology is preferred, including experience conducting a broad variety of wildlife scopes in pre-construction and construction settings;Species at Risk experience is an asset;Plant identification and invasive weed identification is an asset;Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations, legislation, authorizations and permits;Knowledge of scientific study design and implementation for field data collection;Strong written and verbal communication skills;Excellent interpersonal, organizational, collaboration and time management skills;Detail-oriented, emphasizing quality of work;Willingness to learn and adapt to a diverse work environment, which includes the ability to work in all weather conditions and learn how to operate all-terrain equipment;Superior problem-solving skills, with the ability to think outside the box;A commitment to health, safety, and wellness;Valid Driver's License.VAST prides itself on being valued and trusted by our employees, clients, colleagues, and the communities in which we live, work and play.
