This recent development means that we have opportunities for a physician with an interest in critical care medicine, Dual Trained Specialist Intensivists, or anaesthetists or emergency medical specialists with an interest in critical care medicine.
Currently, Southland Hospital has a six bed Critical Care Unit. Following significant investment, we aim to have the necessary staffing and resources for two Intensive Care level beds and four High Dependency care level beds. The current 6 bed critical care unit admits around 500 patients per annum. The case-mix will be diverse given our large geographical catchment area, catering for general medical, surgical, and trauma patients. Paediatric and burns patients can also be stabilised and cared for in the ICU until aeromedical transportation to other centres can be arranged if required.
During our recruitment phase of remodelling our critical care unit, duties will be conducted as part of a shared roster with anaesthesia department colleagues. Clinical and non-clinical duties will be rostered as per ASMS contract agreement. You will be expected to undertake a full share of the Intensive Care on-call roster with other members of the team. With the development of our service, other duties will include participation in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, nurses, and medical students, team ward rounds, quality and safety activities, audit, and clinical review meetings.
