Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal Te Ropu Whakatika Kaimahi Hauora The Ministry of Health Manatu Hauora is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as a Deputy Chairperson member of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal Te Ropu Whakatika Kaimahi Hauora (the Tribunal).
The Tribunal is established under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (the Act).
The purpose of the Tribunal is to adjudicate on charges of professional misconduct laid against health practitioners.

You will be committed to improving the health of New Zealanders through protecting the consumers of health services by hearing charges arising from the conduct of health practitioners.
The Tribunal's decisions also provide a valuable educative role in setting and maintaining professional standards.
The functions and powers of the Tribunal are set out in sections 85, 91, 100, and 101 of the HPCA Act.

The Deputy Chairs are appointed to the Tribunal by the Minister of Health or their delegate, typically for terms of up to three years and can be reappointed.
No person may hold office as the Chair or Deputy Chair for more than nine consecutive years.
This is not a full-time position.
Tribunal members should expect a hearing to take anywhere from one day up to three weeks.
Each hearing length will be different for a variety of reasons, but members are usually given an estimate by the Executive Officers of the Tribunal of how long a hearing may take when they are looking to form a panel.
Travel may sometimes be required for face-to-face hearings; however, in some instances, hearings can occur via audio-visual link.
Korero mou About you Deputy Chairs must be a barrister or solicitor of the High Court of no less than seven years' practice in accordance with section 86 of the HPCA Act.
In this instance, we are particularly looking to receive applications from candidates that can represent the perspectives of Maori, Pacific people, and people with lived experience of a disability.
Deputy Chairs must have skills and abilities of a judicial officer, and in particular: Significant experience in the health and disability sector Leadership Tribunal and court situations Keen judgement, particularly the ability to analyse and evaluate evidence, and the ability to evaluate personalities Facilitation skills: In the hearing room, to maintain good order and when adjudicating, the Deputy Chair must be a team player to ensure all Tribunal members participate fully Excellent written and reasoning skills.
Applicants from across New Zealand are welcome.
The Tribunal will meet as and when required, dependent on the number of hearings per year.
The time commitment for hearings varies, from one to four days depending on the nature of the case.
The majority are heard within one to two days.
Under section 86 of the HPCA Act, members of a Responsible Authority board are not eligible to be a Chair, Deputy Chair, or a member of the Tribunal.
