Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora - Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty – Tauranga, North Island
We are seeking a team leader to provide team leadership for a large, multi-site team of Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs), overseeing workflow, performance, and service quality. Manage recruitment, onboarding, regular team meetings, 1:1 relationships with direct reports and annual appraisals, ensuring a safe and effective work environment. Facilitate HIP training, record oversight, incident management, service development and improvement, and operational support while coordinating with General Practices, community and secondary services, and other healthcare partners.
Te Whatu Ora requires all HIPs to hold registration under one of the following:
A fully registered health practitioner under the Health Practitioner Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act 2003 with a scope of practice that is appropriate to working as a mental health and addiction clinician e.g. nurse, psychologist, psychotherapist, occupational therapist.
A fully registered alcohol and drug and/or gambling practitioner member of the Drug and Alcohol Addiction Practitioners' Association Aotearoa - New Zealand (dapaanz).
A fully registered Social Worker.
A full member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) who meets the criteria and has been accredited by the NZAC to work within the mental health and addictions services scope of practice.
In addition, people employed in these roles must hold a full current annual practicing certificate and have the relevant skills and experience for working in mental health and addiction services including knowledge and skills to undertake mental health and addiction clinical assessments. All people employed in these roles must have received training in providing talking therapies. They must also have satisfied all other necessary requirements for working with vulnerable children and adults including requirements in relation to police vetting.
Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs) are required to engage in training with Te Pou which consists of an in-person or virtual classroom-based training programme followed by a six-month practicum. HIPs will need to be supported by their employers to ensure that they engage in all aspects of training and meet all assessment requirements.

Proven experience as a people leader and team manager, ideally with demonstrated experience leading large teams.
Proven experience working in a mana enhancing way as a team leader, to get the best out of your team and help them maintain a sense of purpose and happiness in their role.
A full registration under one of the following: Health Practitioners Competency Assurance (HPCA) Act 2003, Drug and Alcohol Practitioners' Association Aotearoa–New Zealand (DAPANZ), Social Work Registration Authority (SWRB), or New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC), with a scope of practice appropriate to working as a mental health and addiction clinician.
It is desirable to have experience working in a General Practice or Community health service.
Experience and advanced knowledge of programme management and health improvement approaches.
Hold and maintain a full current annual practicing certificate.
A full Clean NZ Driver Licence and confidence with driving vehicles.
Experience working as a Health Improvement Practitioner.
Extensive experience in primary care and community mental health service provision.
Proven staff leadership and management skills.
Experience and advanced knowledge from the health sector.
A caring and compassionate approach to all aspects of service with a passion for supporting and empowering people living with health issues.
Proven communication skills and ability to develop professional relationships, meeting and exceeding all stakeholder expectations.
Experience working with Maori and an understanding of Te Reo me ona tikanga Maori and proven commitment to implementation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Ability to provide effective and supportive management and teaching to HIPs.
Confidence in managing IT applications and the ability to report regularly on services provided and outcomes achieved.
