About the role | Mo te turanga
As the Head Chef at Lifewise Merge Cafe, you will serve as the heartbeat of our culinary operations, overseeing the daily functions while reporting to the Merge Social Enterprise and Operations Manager. This role is not just about crafting delicious meals; it's about creating a safe, non-judgmental, and welcoming space for people from all walks of life. Additionally, you will play a vital role in the skill upliftment of the less fortunate, making a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve.
Collaborating closely with the Operations Manager, you will work towards expanding the social impact and footprint of the Lifewise Merge Café. The role will require an early start and may require some flexibility in working hours.
The hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 am—2:30 pm, and there is no weekend or public holiday shifts (though occasional flexibility may be required for events, after-hours fundraisers, or catering).
Culinary Leadership: Develop and execute a diverse, high-quality menu aligned with Lifewise Merge Cafe's mission, while maintaining food standards and integrating community preferences.
Team & Volunteer Collaboration: Mentor chefs, engage volunteers, and foster a collaborative kitchen culture while ensuring a positive experience for all staff and patrons.
Operational Excellence: Manage kitchen logistics, from inventory to budget adherence, ensuring health and safety compliance and cost-effective practices.
Social Enterprise Focus: Champion the café's social impact by aligning culinary efforts with social goals and partnering with local, sustainable suppliers.
Community & Skill Development: Create a welcoming environment for patrons, while offering skill-building opportunities to individuals facing employment challenges.

A passion for social enterprise and making a positive community impact is essential for this role.
Flexibility in working hours will be required.
Proven experience as a chef in a high-volume kitchen.
