About the Role We are seeking a General Surgeon to join our Surgical team on a full-time permanent basis. We are looking for a surgeon who demonstrates a commitment to high quality care, collegiality, teamwork, teaching and leadership in the field. The successful candidate will manage a wide range of General Surgical conditions and be expected to fully participate in the General Surgical on call roster (1:10) and manage acute patients. An experienced endoscopist for both upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures would be an advantage. Interest or post-fellowship training in Trauma or Breast would be an advantage.
About the Team/Service/Location The General Surgical and Vascular team is part of a close knit and supportive medical community within the Hawke's Bay district. Our team is committed to providing a high quality of care to the Hawke's Bay population. There is a strong collegial attitude, supportive teamwork and active commitments to ongoing education and service improvements. We are a department of ten General Surgeons plus a Vascular Surgeon, working alongside our junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists. We have four accredited General Surgery SET trainees and eight unaccredited General Surgical registrars along with an acute SHO and team House Surgeons. There are clinical nurse specialists for all the major subspecialties. Our support team includes our departmental secretary and enthusiastic nurses on the wards, clinics and theatre.
Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital is located in Hastings, New Zealand. It is a 400-bed secondary-care public hospital facility, providing acute and elective care for a region of 180,000 people. The hospital offers a full range of surgical, medical, oncology and radiological services. It provides an 11-bed combined Intensive Care Unit/High Dependency Unit staffed by dedicated Intensivists, an Anaesthetic department capable of handling all major cases, and Interventional Radiology support. Medical Oncology is based on site with four Medical Oncologists and planning to commission on site Radiation Oncology is underway. Other surgical specialties on site include: ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Urology, Maxillo-Facial and Obstetrics/Gynaecology. Paediatric Surgery have visiting clinics and lists. Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery visit for clinics, but provide surgical support and acute cover from the capital.
There are eight operating theatres with recent renovations completed in 2024 to the Perioperative Unit. There is a separate endoscopy services building that was commissioned in 2018 in time to start offering the National Bowel Screening Programme to the Hawke's Bay population, with two endoscopy rooms operating and the third future-proofed room due to be commissioned for 2025 to meet growing demand. We are currently getting an upgraded outpatient clinic building plus departmental offices constructed on the Hastings campus for the General Surgical and Vascular Departments, due for opening February 2025 to support our growing needs. We also provide outreach clinics to Napier, Wairoa and Waipukurau.
About You Applicants should have the following qualifications and attributes:
Be registered, or eligible for registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as a Specialist General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, or equivalent.
Hold an approved higher qualification in Surgery, enabling Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
Competency with te ao Maori, tikanga, and te reo Maori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
Experience in projects/initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Matauranga Maori and Kaupapa Maori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
