We serve a population of approximately 259,000 for the major population centres of Tauranga, Katikati, Te Puke, Whakatane, Kawerau and Opotiki. There is a strong Maori population based in the Eastern Bay of Plenty with around 51% of people identifying as Maori. About the Role Whakatane is a purpose-built secondary care hospital offering acute services to the people of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Services offered include emergency medicine, paediatric, general and orthopaedic surgery, obstetrics and mental health – alongside acute and ambulatory general medicine. The Medical service consists of a team of seven physicians who work alongside the multidisciplinary team and junior medical staff to provide patient care for both acute and long-term conditions. Current physicians within the service have wide experience in acute medicine and areas of sub-speciality such as rural medicine. Access to other subspecialty areas such as oncology, renal and neurology are available regionally at Tauranga and Waikato Hospitals with clinics being delivered at Whakatane regularly. Working in the acute medical service at Whakatane is rewarding and busy with a wide range of patient case types and complex presentations. Like many hospitals of this size, there are close collegial relationships across all services and a friendly supportive work environment. About You We are seeking to recruit a Senior Medical consultant with strong skills and experience in acute medicine, an interest in training and growing junior medical staff and a commitment to growth in secondary health service delivery to meet current and future health care needs within a unique NZ population. With the progression of NZ Rural training programme, we are also interested in applications from NZ Rural trained consultants – particularly those who have training and experience in a range of settings such as high acuity/ emergency care, acute medicine, palliative care, and chronic disease management.
