General Manager Community and Engagement In partnership with its community, Environment Southland (Regional Council) is responsible for the sustainable management of Southland's natural resources - land, water, air and coast. Council operates in a large geographical region from Stewart Island to Fiordland. The organisation is going through a change process which is largely driven by a desire to refresh how they deliver collaboratively with their partners in the community and advancing their integrated catchment management approach.
As part of this process, the CE is looking to appoint a General Manager Community and Engagement who will be responsible for leading the Community and Engagement Group to ensure the delivery of a cohesive approach to how Council engages, communicates, advises, educates and consults with its communities, partners, and stakeholders. This is a new role, and the detailed design of the group is yet to be completed. It will pull together the communications team and those that are involved in front-line engagement.
The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled strategic communications, relationships, partnerships, and engagement professional. They will have strong leadership experience, particularly in leading change and bringing teams together to drive cohesion. They will have a proactive and strategic approach, with a mindset that looks to do things differently, focused on strategic communications and engagement outcomes rather than the status quo.
The ideal candidate will most likely have worked in local Government or similar environments and be politically astute. They will have a deep understanding of front-line, boots on the ground engagement and a broad view of stakeholders and partnership including neighbouring councils, central Government, commercial industry groups, and regional communities. An understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Maori, Tikanga and the principles relating to Te Tiriti o Waitangi will be expected.
This is a rare opportunity to make your mark in a strategic communications and engagement role at a leadership team level.
