The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and inspection of a fleet of vehicles, including trucks, vans, and specialized equipment. The role ensures that all vehicles within the fleet are operating efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company standards and government regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Repairs:
Perform routine maintenance on fleet vehicles, including oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues with vehicles and equipment.
Repair or replace defective parts such as engines, transmissions, and brake systems.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks to extend the lifespan of vehicles and reduce downtime.
Work with a variety of vehicle types, including diesel trucks, passenger vans, and specialized equipment (e.g., forklifts, lift gates).
Inspection & Testing:
Conduct inspections to ensure that all vehicles comply with safety regulations and industry standards.
Test drive vehicles to assess their performance after repairs or maintenance.
Use diagnostic tools and computer software to identify issues and ensure proper functionality.
Documentation & Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate service records for all repairs, maintenance, and inspections.
Track vehicle mileage, maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.
Report vehicle conditions and any concerns to the Fleet Manager/Supervisor.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards and OSHA regulations.
Maintain knowledge of current regulations concerning fleet operations and vehicle standards.
Communicate effectively with drivers to understand vehicle issues and perform repairs in a timely manner.
Work closely with the Fleet Manager and other team members to ensure fleet operations are not disrupted.
Assist with troubleshooting and providing technical support to drivers in the field when needed.
Experience:
Proven experience as a fleet mechanic or automotive technician is highly desired but mechanical experience of any kind will be highly considered.
Experience working with a variety of vehicle types, including diesel engines, is a plus.
Skills & Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and air conditioning.
Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems.
Good problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry heavy tools, equipment, and vehicle parts.
Ability to crouch, kneel, or work under vehicles for extended periods.
Must be comfortable working in various weather conditions and outdoor environments. (Majority of work completed in the workshop).
