The City of Mount Vernon has opened the National Testing Network (NTN) Fire Team Testing window for the January 2025 Academy. Test today through NTN to start the process of joining Mount Vernon's Fire Department and support their mission of helping people every day!

Application Process:
Candidates must complete an online application and questionnaire with the City of Mount Vernon to be considered for this position. Applications can be found on the City of Mount Vernon's career page.

CPAT Certification:
A current, valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification will be accepted from NTN or another agency licensed by the IAFF/AFC as a CPAT provider. Proof of a valid CPAT must be submitted with your application.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:
Effective August 16, 2021, all new hires to the City will be required, as a condition of employment, to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before the start date.

Salary Information:
Firefighter/Paramedic – 3rd Grade: $7,651.22 per month
Firefighter/Paramedic – 2nd Grade: $8,398.01 per month
Firefighter/Paramedic – 1st Grade: $9,330.55 per month

Mount Vernon Firefighter/Paramedics receive comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as life insurance. Additional benefits include flexible spending accounts, a medical insurance opt-out program, 10 hours of vacation per month, 14 hours of sick leave per month, and access to an employee assistance program. All eligible employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems pension plan. Additionally, employees may participate in the City's 457 deferred compensation retirement savings plan with a 4% City match.

Department Overview:
The Mount Vernon Fire Department is responsible for fire prevention, investigation, suppression, emergency medical services, and emergency management for the City. Firefighters respond to over 8,260 emergency and non-emergency calls annually. The department operates from three stations strategically located in the City and a neighboring fire district.

Job Requirements:
Age: Minimum 21
Citizenship: Must be lawfully allowed to work in the U.S.
Education: 90 quarter credit hours from an accredited college or university
Driver's License: Valid Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one within six months
Language: Ability to read and speak English
Academy Certification: Ability to obtain FFI certification upon completion of the Washington State Fire Academy (City will send candidate to Academy)
Necessary Certifications: Washington State Paramedic Certification, National Registry, or other state equivalency with the ability to be certified in Washington by the hire date

Selection Process:
Step 1: Complete the testing process through the National Testing Network (NTN).
Step 2: Submit an application through the City of Mount Vernon's website by October 27, 2024.
Step 3: Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and completing steps 1 and 2 will be invited to an oral board and assessment the week of November 12, 2024.
Step 4: Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility register based on their scores from the NTN Written Exam, Oral Board Interviews, Assessment Center, plus Veteran's preference.
Step 5: The most qualified candidates will be invited to a Chief's Interview during the week of December 2, 2024.
Step 6: Conditional offers of employment will be contingent on passing the following: Psychological exam
Pre-employment medical exam and drug screen
Criminal background check
Driving abstract review
Satisfactory reference checks
Step 7: Anticipated start date is January 15, 2025. The Firefighter Recruit Academy begins on January 22, 2025.
The eligibility register from this recruitment will be valid until November 2025.
