Job Description: Fire Alarm Design Engineer
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Fire Alarm Design Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing fire alarm systems, managing external mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fire protection (MEP&F) engineering resources, and ensuring high-quality, code-compliant designs. This role involves technical leadership, coordination with CAD/Revit teams, and client communication to deliver successful fire protection solutions across various projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertake fire alarm system design and manage the direction of MEP&F engineers involved in the project.
Work closely with the CAD/Revit team to ensure the accurate and timely execution of all engineering and drafting work for fire protection and MEP&F projects.
Supervise CAD/Revit modelers to produce detailed HVAC mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fire protection (MEP&F) BIM models and installation drawings.
Provide technical support and identify value engineering opportunities during the concept, tender, or contract stages.
Ensure projects are completed within contract specifications, industry standards, and budget constraints while maintaining high-quality standards.
Collaborate with structural engineers and other stakeholders to integrate fire safety measures into overall building designs.
Conduct fire risk assessments and develop fire safety strategies in compliance with relevant codes and standards.
Prepare detailed technical reports, drawings, and calculations to support fire alarm system designs.
Oversee the review of existing documentation, on-site construction monitoring, and audits to ensure design compliance.
Manage client relationships, project timelines, and budgets while ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Fire Engineering or Mechanical Engineering; a master's degree in Fire Engineering is an advantage.
5-10+ years of experience working with fire alarm systems and MEP&F design projects.
Extensive knowledge of fire engineering principles, NZ Building Codes, and related legislation.
Experience managing the delivery and financial performance of small to medium-scale fire protection projects.
Proficient with CAD/Revit software for the creation of BIM models and installation drawings.
Membership with IPENZ or Engineering New Zealand (CPEng preferred).
Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate with stakeholders effectively.
Commercially astute, with experience in calculations, design modelling, and providing engineering support for Design & Build projects.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on innovation.
Skills:
Expertise in fire alarm systems design, including the use of Acceptable Solutions, Verification Methods, and Alternative Solutions methodologies.
Strong knowledge of CFD modelling and fire safety engineering solutions.
Excellent time management, organization, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
