The Acorn Project is an organisation that supports young people and their families living with cancer in Hawke's Bay. We are seeing an increase in the number of young people and families reaching out to us and are looking for a Family Support Worker to join our small team. There will be times that our team works with a young person and times we will be supporting their parents / carers, giving them reassurance and guidance of the best ways to share information or approach difficult conversations. Regardless of who is receiving the support, the focus always remains on building bonds within the family whilst upholding confidentiality. Helping young people to make informed choices around decisions affecting their lives, to feel empowered to share their thoughts and opinions, to feel content with the choices they have made for their health and well-being, and to feel supported enabling them to voice their choices and reasons for them. Creating safe environments where young people, parents and carers can share how they overcame situations and experiences, building their support networks.You will need to. Have a strong listening ear. Sometimes our members just need to talk. At other times they will need you to be their advocate at home or at school, with medical teams and government agencies, and wherever else they need to feel empowered, and their voice heard.Be flexible. We respond to our members needs, when and where they need us most. You will be working a 30-hour week to start, and this will involve evening and some weekend working hours.Bring your skills. Former experience as a social worker, a youth worker or in the not-for-profit sector would be valuable. You will need a full and clean New Zealand driver's licence and be able to obtain a clear Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Police vetting check.
