Our transmission network includes over 12,000km of transmission lines, 25,000 transmission towers and 170 substations - assets that are worth more than $5 billion and provide direct benefit to Aotearoa.Our Grid Development division is responsible for identifying and conveying our future Grid needs up to 30 plus years ahead and develops transmission asset management strategies to meet our strategic objectives as outlined in Transmission Tomorrow and Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko.Tactical Engineering and Estimation provides engineering support and expertise to the planning, investigations and project delivery functions within Grid Development.
It ensures that Transpower's objectives are met through quality, cost-effective engineering design which is carried out by external Engineering Consultants.Enquiries to connect to the Grid from generators, distributors, and end-users have doubled in the past three years and these projects are cheaper and faster to build than ever before.
We are working hard to ensure we can respond by offering connections faster and more efficiently.About The TeamOur Substations teams in Grid Development provide essential project engineering services that keep our nation powered.
Working closely with the Tactical Engineering Group, the Substations teams develop projects with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring that grid requirements are met and risks managed.The teams provide engineered solutions that minimise risk and maximise value for New Zealand energy users.
This is achieved via creating and updating Transpower station standards, specifications, and standard designs as well as providing technical support to both internal and external users of Transpower standards.About The Opportunity - Available Due To Lateral PromotionAs Substations Standards Manager, you will continue our journey to embed value engineering within our standard design.
A strategic leader, you'll play a key part in value engineering and the decision-making process regarding what and how work is carried out on the national grid.
You'll work closely with the Tactical Engineering leadership team and be part of the Substations Leadership team which covers Project Engineering and Standards.You'll be responsible for the development and maintenance of substation standards and all the associated documentation to support an outsourced delivery model.
You'll also support the wider Tactical Engineering and Estimation group to align standards development with other teams as they don't have a dedicated Standards Manager.Based in Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch you'll enjoy a wide variety of work as you:Lead a professional, collaborative team, providing clear vision and direction while encouraging a culture of continuous improvement and health, safety, and wellbeing.Oversee the development, maintenance, and compliance of substation standards and associated documentation.
Facilitate reviews and manage updates and innovations.Conduct gap analyses, lead engineering standards change management processes, and drive strategic alignment and continuous improvement initiatives.Build and maintain strategic relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, including industry groups, regulatory bodies, and service providers.Collaborate with other Tactical Engineering teams and provide technical expertise and resources to Project Engineering to support the broader business as required.What will you bring?We are keen to hear from you if you have people leadership experience in a strategically focused role and are passionate about feasible engineering solutions and capability building.To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:A relevant bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent e.g.
Asset Management.At least ten years significant experience in engineering, infrastructure, or asset management.Proven ability to lead technically orientated teams, including driving standardisation.Demonstrated ability to lead the production and continuous improvement of risk-based standard designs.Commercial acuity and well-developed communication and influencing skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate complex engineering concepts in a manner that can be understood by a wider audience with differing abilities and skills.While not essential, the following experience is advantageous:A post-graduate tertiary qualification (preferred) and/or registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineering New Zealand (or equivalent).Experience in developing engineering standards.Understanding of the funding and regulatory implications of decisions.Advanced knowledge of transmission systems design, planning, and strategy.Experience within the Electrical industry and particularly substations.Join us at TranspowerAotearoa is powered by the people who work here.
