Emergency Physician, Palmerston North Hospital

Details of the offer

Te Whatu Ora Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua MidCentral are looking for an additional full-time Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (or international equivalent), eligible for vocational or locum specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, to join our enthusiastic team at Palmerston North Hospital.
You will be joining a strong team of Emergency Physicians from New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, and South Africa, as well as 3 clinical nurse specialists and 3 nurse practitioners.
We are responsible for supervising 24 resident medical officers (a mix of registrars and senior house officers) as well as 6th year medical students from the University of Otago.
We are accredited for Tier 2 (24 months) training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, we have a highly successful teaching program for the Part I ACEM examination, and we are keen to develop a robust Part II program.
Each week we have protected teaching time, including time in our simulation centre, for registrars, house officers, and students.
On average you will work 80 hours per fortnight, or four 10-hour shifts per week, with a 1 in 4 weekend commitment. Overnight call occurs (on average) once a week and is taken from home.
School holidays leave is equitably distributed among all members of our senior medical team. The Palmerston North Hospital ED sees approximately 48,000 adult and paediatric presentations per annum, with an admission rate of around 30%.
We are an Australasian Level 4 ED and regional trauma centre, and see a higher than average trauma workload due to agricultural injuries from the many farms in the area as well as road accidents from the several state highways transecting the region.
We have a trauma team that operates 24/7 and, working closely with our surgical and anaesthetic colleagues, we have recently updated and refined our trauma and disaster protocols.
We have access to all acute services on-site with the exception of neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and plastic surgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington Hospital or Hutt Hospital. Palmerston North Hospital is a 287 bed secondary hospital on the lower North Island, servicing a total catchment population of approximately 200,000 people, of which approximately 90,000 live in the city.
Our catchment area has a higher than average population of Maori and Pacific people, and we are committed to achieving equity in health care for them.
Palmerston North itself is a vibrant, multicultural city that is home to outstanding primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, including Massey University.
There are excellent restaurants and shops, and ample local opportunities for outdoor activities including mountain biking, tramping, fishing, hunting, and camping.
Palmerston North has recently opened a lovely new cycle way and walkway across and along the Manawatu River, and there are plans for many more civic improvements over the next few years.
We are also an easy drive to the Tasman Sea, Hawkes Bay, Mount Taranaki, Mount Ruapehu, and Lake Taupo. Our airport has recently been expanded, and there are multiple flights every day to and from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
Cost of living is reasonable, housing is affordable, and rural living with stunning views only minutes from town is easily achievable.
