Emergency Medicine Consultant 12 Month Fixed Term (Parental Leave Cover) May 2024 Te Whatu Ora Lakes, Rotorua Hospital Emergency Department is seeking full or part-time FACEMS (Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine) or equivalent to join their team for a period of 12 months to cover parental leave.
You will be joining our happy and collegial team of 12 Emergency Physicians supported by a great nursing workforce including 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists.
We have 14 Resident Medical Officers who are a mix of Registrars, Senior House Officers, and House Officers.
We are currently accredited for 24 months of ACEM training.
We run a well-regarded structured teaching programme which offers protected teaching time.
We also supervise 4th and 6th year medical students from Auckland University.
In addition to supporting external CME activity for our SMOs, we also run an internal CME programme and peer review process.
We have clinical leads in ultrasound and trauma and run a rigorous M&M programme and audit cycle.
We are actively engaged with ACEM's Manaaki Mana strategy and work closely with our local Maori Health team.
Rotorua Emergency Department sees approximately 38,000 presentations each year and the admission rate is 30-35%.
Paediatric presentations make up 25% of our total volume.
We are a 34 bed facility with 2 Resuscitation areas, 5 acute monitoring cubicles, and 17 monitored cubicle spaces, as well as dedicated Whanau and Palliative care rooms.
We have 4 paediatric rooms and 2 procedure rooms.
We have 24-hour access to Radiology, Laboratory, and Blood bank services.
We are a Tier 2 ED and we see a higher than average amount of trauma due to our surrounding rural geography and demographic and the proximity of mountain bike trails and other outdoor pursuits.
We are connected to the Midland Regional Trauma system and operate a 24/7 trauma team.
We have acute services on site but transfer out to Waikato Hospital for Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Plastic Surgery.
Rotorua Hospital is a 308 bed secondary hospital in the centre of the North Island.
Our catchment population is over 100,000 people over a geographically large area.
We sit on land gifted by the Te Arawa people and we have a higher than average population of Maori and Pacific people.
We work closely with our colleagues in Maori Health towards achieving equity and cultural safety for our Maori patients and their whanau.
