Applications are invited for the position of Emergency Medicine Registrar for the January 2024 training year in Te Whatu Ora MidCentral, in Te Papaioea Palmerston North.
Part-time positions are available by arrangement. For successful ACEM advanced trainees, a six-month rotation in Anaesthetics is available after completing six months in our Emergency Department.
This is accredited towards the Critical Care component of the training programme. Te Whatu Ora MidCentral Emergency Department is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 55,000 presentations per annum.
The ED sees a large volume of trauma due to its large rural catchment area, as well as high acuity paediatric and adult medical patients.
There is excellent exposure to critical procedures, and we see a vast range of complex pathology. There is access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.
Mo tenei turanga mahi About this role Te Whatu Ora MidCentral Emergency Department has a close-knit team of FACEMs who are committed to providing a supportive training environment and to the career development of our registrars.
The Emergency Department is a mixed ED and is Tier 2 accredited under the revised Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) training programme (24 months).
It is also accredited for Paediatric Emergency Medicine and the Paediatric Logbook components of the training programme.
Once within our organisation, trainees can apply for excellent non-ED accredited runs in paediatric medicine, cardiology and general medicine.
The role of ED Registrar has an equity focus to ensure patients and whanau meet their health equity needs, with particular regard to improving the health outcomes for Maori as a population.
What's in it for you Our department is committed to supporting our trainees as they progress through the ACEM training programme. The department prides itself on its weekly, structured, protected teaching programme which is consultant led.
This programme is delivered using an array of teaching strategies (tutorials, simulation sessions, clinical skills workshops, morbidity and mortality meetings, clinical radiology sessions) and features dedicated paediatric emergency medicine teaching.
For junior trainees, there is a highly supported and successful Primary examination teaching programme with one of the highest success rates across Australasia.
Our Fellowship examination preparation programme is run by FACEMs who are on the ACEM Council of Education Fellowship Exam Writing Group.
Both the Primary and Fellowship examination programme sessions are delivered weekly in addition to the protected teaching programme.
The department also offers an embedded mentoring programme which aligns with the ACEM mentoring strategy. In addition, there are opportunities for clinical research and involvement in departmental non-clinical portfolios by agreement.
For our advanced trainees, there is the opportunity to apply for the Senior Registrar role, which brings exposure to leadership and management, and which is remunerated accordingly.
As a department, we are committed to the ACEM Aotearoa Manaaki Mana Strategy. During your time with us, you will be provided with cultural competence and cultural safety training which will progress you into learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the founding document which encapsulates the fundamental relationship between the Crown and Iwi.
You will be given the opportunity to more deeply understand our responsibility to eliminate Maori health inequities, and how to practise Emergency Medicine in a way that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Mou ake About you Ideal applicants will have completed at least 6 months in Emergency Medicine, and should be post-graduate year 3 or above.
Applicants who are successful for this position may have the opportunity to apply for the ACEM training programme, if not already enrolled.
You will require dual expertise in Maori health advocacy and clinical practice. Your approach will be whanau-centred healthcare, which means people are at the heart of everything you do.
You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of, Te Ao Maori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Maori.
You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of, te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the health sector.
