The Wellington Region RMO positions are rotational across Wellington and Hutt Valley Hospitals, which means that you may rotate to either of these sites during your time with us. If you are successful in gaining a position, the service will do their best to accommodate the run preferences stated within your cover letter.
RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) Single-Employer Collective Agreements.

Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Hospitals
Wellington Regional Hospital has modern facilities and offers exciting opportunities and top-level training. Te Pae Tiaki (The Wellington Hospital Emergency Department) provides emergency care to people in the Greater Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti regions. Each year the Department sees approximately 65,000 patients. With 45 treatment cubicles including three resuscitation bays, seven minor care and one eye. The majority have access to cardiac monitoring. Our medium hospital size brings friendliness to the work environment.
Our hospital is a leader in training for Emergency Medicine – accredited by ACEM for 36 months of metropolitan training, Paediatric Log-book and TS4 under the new training programme. Wellington trainees continue to excel at the primary and fellowship exams. We also have established training rotations to Paediatrics and ICU, both accredited for TS4, and also available to more junior trainees.
Our Director of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound provides an active ultrasound training programme with weekly review of all scans and regular mentored scanning for all interested. Other areas of interest include: Toxicology, Simulation Training, Trauma and Disaster planning. Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington ED has an established mentoring programme.
The Hospital campus includes the Wellington division of the Otago Clinical School of Medicine and the National Patient Simulator Training Centre, providing additional opportunities for teaching and research.
Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington Hospital Emergency Department offers:
A great work environment, in a 45 bed department with a broad Emergency case mix including paediatrics and trauma, with support from all tertiary specialties;
Emergency consultant cover on the floor 16+ hours per day, and on call overnight. This means an Emergency Specialist is usually immediately available to you for consultation/clinical review or questions;
Supportive team based working practice (working in teams with small groups of doctors and nurses in zoned areas);
A supportive training environment with dedicated teaching time, dedicated ACEM Exam tutorials with an exceptional pass rate in Primary and Fellowship, on the floor training, ample opportunity to do Work-based assessments (WBAs) and weekly simulation-based critical scenario teaching. Shifts are also allocated weekly for an emergency registrar to attend theatre for anaesthetic experience.

HVDHB – Hutt Valley Hospital
Is a busy 260-bed facility covering both Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. The hospital serves a population of 145,000. We have a world-renowned plastic and burns unit, regional rheumatology and public health services, and all our specialties have a strong focus on excellence and innovation.
The Hutt Hospital Emergency Department sees over 51,000 patients per annum. We see a diverse caseload including acutely ill children and adults, burns, and mental health. Our 30 bed Department is modern and purpose-built – providing a pleasant physical environment for patient care, comprised of Resuscitation bays, Acute bays and Sub-acute treatment areas. We have strong and friendly links with inpatient units, including ICU, O&G, Paeds, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Dermatology and Orthopaedics. Our ED is staffed with 14 enthusiastic consultants and is accredited for 24 months of Emergency Medicine Training with ACEM, as a designated urban district hospital as well as TS4 accreditation. ED consultants are present for 16+ hours per day and are available on call overnight.

Weekly teaching for all RMOs is provided in protected teaching time and combined with Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington ED
Electives available in Anaesthetics, Fracture Clinic, Dressings/Plastics Clinic, Acute Dental Pain Clinic, ENT clinic
Weekly Simulations/Resuscitation drills
Bedside teaching/supervision including use of ultrasound
We have a supportive group of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, allied health, and administrative staff
Mou – About you
Suitable for Resident Medical Officers who will be PGY4/F4 or above by the role commencement date.
Candidates must have at least 12 months previous experience working within Emergency Medicine.
You must have eligibility for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Information on the process of application for this can be found on their website at www.mcnz.org.nz.
You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ. The immigration NZ website can be found at www.immigration.govt.nz.
