With a population of just under 50,000, approximately 80% in the city of Turanga-nui-a-kiwa Gisborne, the region is culturally rich and unique with a high proportion of Maori (55%). In addition to bringing your Emergency Medicine expertise, you will be able to make a significant contribution to address inequities in health care. You will become familiar with Te Reo and Te Ao Maori and play an important role in our mission to become more responsive to the needs of Tangata Whenua (the people of this land). As the hospital expands, we anticipate other opportunities including leadership, participation in aeromedical retrievals, medical education, and EM outreach services. The Emergency Department has been recently accredited for training for Rural Hospitalist Medicine Training Program registrars and accreditation for ACEM training registrars is anticipated. Who we are Gisborne is the primary health care facility on the East Cape of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Hospital is a 115-bed teaching hospital and has inpatient services in medical and surgical, women's health, and paediatrics. Total yearly attendances of 25,000 and a 20 percent admission rate. The department has 14 beds including resuscitation and isolation bays. There is access to onsite laboratory and radiology facilities (CT, US, MRI). The group is comprised of FACEM or vocationally registered emergency specialists working with urgent care doctors.
