Position Description DIRECTOR OF SPORT Key Objective The Director of Sport is responsible for professionally leading the development, delivery, and evaluation of a comprehensive programme of sporting opportunities at Rangi Ruru Girls' School.
The programme aims to encourage all students to achieve their potential in sport, across the full spectrum of abilities, from participation to excellence.
Direct Reports: Assistant Director of Sport (with direct reports for Sports Coordinator & Head of Yr 7/8 Sport and Sports Coordinator) Equestrian Manager Rowing Manager Sports Coordinator Fitness Centre Manager S&C Manager Mental Skills Coach & SOAR Coordinator Sports Coaches (including external contractors) Reports to: Assistant Principal Systems Operations Co-curricular Key relationships: SMT Operations Manager Directors Deans Hola PE/Health Staff who support sport This document is subject to reasonable amendments from time to time by the employer to reflect the changing requirements of the position.
Responsibilities 1.
Sports Faculty Strategic Planning Provide strategic leadership and a vision for sport which is supportive of the organisational goals and objectives.
a) Development of an overall strategic plan for sport at Rangi Ruru, in alignment with the Board's strategic direction.
b) Monitoring and analysis of performance against strategic plan through clear KPIs, reporting as necessary.
c) Advise the Board of Governors through the Principal on strategic matters in relation to the Sports programme, providing advice and recommendations as necessary.
d) Enhance the development of the school's culture through aligning all sporting activities with the school values.
e) Oversight of the delivery of specialist and wrap around programmes which form part of the Rangi sport experience.
2.
Leadership of Sports Faculty Team Effective leadership, management and development of all Sports Faculty team members.
a) Develop and maintain an engaging and positive environment for the Sport Faculty through: i. effective and regular formal and informal communication, including regular team hui ii.
timely performance appraisals iii.
positively and proactively managing performance issues iv.
ensuring that activities carried out are focused on achieving organisation goals v. supporting and developing team members to maximise productivity and enhance individual performance.
b) Support and contribute to staff professional development and learning programmes c) Mentor the Senior Leader appointed as Head of Sport with regular hui throughout the year d) In conjunction with the Sport Faculty, oversee the selection of Sports Captains on an annual basis.
e) Establish positive working relationships with staff contributing to co-curricular sport and ensure staff are appropriately recognised.
3.
Management of Coaching & Management Personnel Recruit, support and retain effective personnel to ensure students experience a quality coaching experience.
a) Recruit and retain quality coaches liaising with Sport Convenors and Sports Faculty staff on appointments.
b) Ensure new coaches are inducted appropriately and have a clear understanding of the expectations of coaching at Rangi Ruru.
c) Manage the contracting of coaches to ensure that documentation and authorisation is completed in a timely manner.
d) Undertake final sign off on all coaching payments.
e) Create opportunities for coaches to network and share knowledge within the coaching group.
f) Support and foster student coaches, referees, and managers, offering training and development as needed.
g) Oversight of volunteer database to ensure that key volunteers working with teams are appropriately vetted and recognised for their contribution.
4.
Operational Management Oversight and management of a well-balanced calendar of sports activities which meet the needs of students.
a) Ensure a "Balance is Better" approach is at the core of the delivery of sport and physical activity opportunities at Rangi Ruru b) Oversee the organisation of major school sporting events and exchanges, ensuring events are delivered efficiently and effectively with high levels of student participation and achievement.
These include but are not limited to: i.
School Athletics ii.
School Swimming Championships iii.
School Cross Country iv.
Summer and Winter Quadrangular Tournaments v. Junior Sports Exchanges (in conjunction with Assistant Director of Sport and Head of Yr 7/8 Sport) c) Oversee and support opportunities for sporting tours and fundraising, ensuring a co-ordinated, equitable and consistent approach to the planning and management of tours and fundraising ventures.
d) Ensure that high standards of student dress, behaviour and supervision are maintained for all sporting activities.
e) Undertake regular reviews of sporting options ensuring that the range of sports and activities offered meets student needs and interests and remain current.
f) Ensure there are opportunities for recreational sporting participation as part of a well-balance sport programme.
g) Be an active member of the Co-Curricular Allowance (CCA) committee, ensuring that staff that support sport are appropriately renumerated 5.
Communication and Celebration of Success and Participation Keep parents, whanau and the community well informed about upcoming events, celebrating both participation and achievements, and encouraging whanau and community participation.
a) Keep the school community well informed of sporting events and achievements.
b) Ensure all sports are visible and appropriately celebrated on social media platforms and the school community.
c) Act as Sports "Spokesperson" for Rangi Ruru, including attendance at RSD Head of Sport/Sports Convenor meetings.
d) Maximise opportunities to champion equity for wahine in the sporting environment.
e) Contribute to the organisation of termly award ceremonies to recognise and celebrate sporting achievements and service.
f) Oversee sporting pocket and colour applications and awards, termly, and review criteria annually to ensure that it remains relevant g) Oversight of annual end of season functions across sporting codes h) Organise and host the annual Sports Awards evening to celebrate sporting success & participation.
i) Regular contributor to school publication as required by the Marketing and Communications Team.
6.
Management of Sports Faculty Budget Maintain all Sports Faculty expenditure within budgeted guidelines.
a) Work in conjunction with the Business Manager to set an annual budget for Sports Faculty expenditure.
b) Liaise with Operations Manager on the purchase and maintenance of all Sports Faculty equipment and facilities involved in sporting activities.
c) Oversight of funding applications in conjunction with Assistant Director of Sport and Development Office in order to minimise costs to whanau.
d) Oversee applications to The Foundation and the PTA to help subsidise costs to students and whanau.
e) Work with Sport Faculty to embed an expectation of fundraising to support students striving for sporting excellence.
7.
Health and Safety Management Manage all aspects of health and safety within the Sports Faculty and ensure a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
a) Comply with the health and safety systems and emergency procedures in place throughout Rangi Ruru to ensure Rangi Ruru is a healthy and safe place to work.
b) Demonstrate a commitment to continuous health and safety improvement.
c) Ensure prompt and accurate reporting of all hazards, accidents and incidents with annual reviews in place.
d) Ensure health and safety paperwork is completed for all sport competitions, activities and events.
e) Attend health and safety update training sessions scheduled.
8.
General Administration a) Undertake any other duties as directed or requested if reasonable with current workload capacity.
b) Such duties are carried out in a timely, professional, accurate manner.
c) Is flexible and cooperative when change is required for the benefit of Rangi Ruru.
d) Present and act in a manner consistent with the Rangi Ruru Girls' School Philosophies and Values and with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa Code of Conduct.
e) Participate in training and development related to the position as required.
f) Actively participate in a regular performance review process, including identifying development needs.
