As a Data Scientist, you will:
Champion the application of advanced data science in GIS and remote sensing technologies to drive impactful solutions for the forestry sector.
Be a subject matter expert in data science / machine learning, with deep expertise in GIS, remote sensing and computer vision.
Serve as a key communicator and advocate for data science and geospatial technologies, engaging with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and industry partners to promote innovation and share insights.
Lead ambitious, high-impact research projects, ensuring timely delivery while upholding the highest standards of scientific and technical excellence.
Collaborate closely with colleagues and customers to translate GIS, remote sensing, and data science breakthroughs into practical, scalable solutions for the forestry sector.
Stay at the cutting edge of emerging trends and technologies in data science, GIS, and remote sensing, ensuring Scion remains a leader in this field.
What are we looking for?
A PhD or MSc in a relevant field such as GIS, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, with a strong focus on GIS and data science.
Proven expertise in GIS and remote sensing technologies, with a demonstrated ability to apply data science principles to geospatial data and research.
A track record of impactful research or innovation in GIS, evidenced by publications in leading journals or significant contributions to the field.
Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python) and experience with GIS software and tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
Deep knowledge of data modelling techniques, including statistical and predictive modelling specifically applied to geospatial data and computer vision.
Experience with advanced data science methods such as machine learning and deep learning in the context of GIS, remote sensing and computer vision.
Familiarity with data engineering processes (e.g., ELT) and distributed computing services (e.g. Amazon AWS) is desirable.
Expertise in data visualisation, presentation and public speaking.
Proven leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to guide a team, manage projects, and drive innovation.
Ability to effectively plan, execute, and oversee research projects, ensuring high standards and successful outcomes.

The salary range for this permanent, fulltime position is $90,000 - $105,000, depending on experience.
