The New Zealand Customs Service Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa protects and promotes New Zealand through world-class border management.
We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports.
We also make sure that lawful travellers and items can move across our border as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
Our Maori name - Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa - translates as "the authority that screens and protects New Zealand".
New Zealand Customs Service Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa is looking for people to join our Wellington team as Customs Officers working variable hours.
Variable Hours Customs Officers work flexibly to help manage Wellington's international flight schedule, as well as a variety of other functions in the Customs airport environment.
What you'll do He aha tau e mahi ana Facilitating passengers and goods in and out of NZ, note taking, writing reports and entering information into our electronic systems Questioning passengers and undertaking activities such as searching baggage Processing passengers through Customs, which might involve sitting in a booth or standing for long periods of time assisting passengers Ensuring passengers meet immigration requirements and identifying risks that may require further interaction About the role Mo tenei turanga mahi You'll be working as required across a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Your hours will fluctuate between seasons and in accordance with flight schedules.
Hours of work are between 40 and 80 hours per pay period/fortnight (with a minimum of 40 hours per fortnight) and vary dependent on flight schedules - there are early (am) starts and late (pm) finishes.
The starting salary is $58,718 per annum.
This is a full-time equivalent starting salary and will be pro-rated based on the hours that you work.
This role also has a variable hours allowance of $13,093 pro-rated on the hours that you work.
Please note, we are recruiting for an intake commencing in early 2025.
About you Ko wai koe To be considered for this role, you will be: Looking for part-time work only Willing to work a split shift pattern (including unsociable hours) as a core part of the role Able to work shifts including weekends, nights, and public holidays Flexible and agile around the work you will undertake Confident navigating computer systems A great communicator and all-round people person Working for Customs Mahi ki te Mana Arai o Aotearoa To work for the New Zealand Customs Service Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa, you must be: A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application; OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA.
You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
Due to the nature of Customs work, you must have a clear Police record.
Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers' licence.
