Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand is a Specialist School for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. We focus on growth, learning, and collaboration. You will join a nationwide team and share their passion for delivering high-quality education and services to DHH students and their whanau. We have 12 provisions (satellite teams) based in primary and secondary schools in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
THE ROLE / TE MAHI
We are in search of either a qualified teacher of the Deaf or an experienced New Zealand registered classroom teacher with an in-depth understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum and assessment tools. This is a permanent part-time (0.5FTE) role covering classroom release time in the Kelston area.
In this role:
Class sizes are small, ranging from 2–7 students per class group.
You will be a teacher with the right skills and attitude to work with a range of DHH students across all communication modes (including New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and spoken English) and in varying learning contexts.
You will work within a Deaf Provision Teaching Team, including Teachers and Teacher Aides of the Deaf, with access to other specialists as required.
Your strong knowledge of the NZ Curriculum will enable you to adapt the curriculum to primarily focus on Literacy and Numeracy with our young students.
Applications will be considered from teachers with recent knowledge of the core business of lifting student achievement and wellbeing. Prior experience working with DHH students is desirable. If required, we will support you in developing an awareness of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community. Proficiency in NZSL or a strong commitment to learning NZSL is essential.
