Contract: Permanent,Full-time, 80hours per fortnight(1.0 FTE) About the role | Korero mo te turanga You will be working as one of two Consultant Psychiatrists in our busy, 23-bed inpatient unit. Medical cover also includes two registrars and two house-surgeons. The unit is primarily intended to provide acute care, but a number of patients remain on the unit beyond the acute phase of illness for a variety of clinical reasons. A significant proportion of the patients will be subject to compulsory assessment and treatment, reflecting the severity of their conditions. Your role will be to work alongside the other psychiatrist to provide clinical care of the patients in the ward, both directly and through supervising other staff, particularly the junior medical staff. Consultant Psychiatrist input is essential in a range of clinical activities, including 24-hour seclusion reviews, periodic reviews of treatment, statutory assessments under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 and decisions about leave and discharge. Nga Rau Rakau is the acute admission facility for seriously mentally ill people in the Hawkes Bay region. The 23-bed unit is made up of 16 inpatient beds and seven sub-acute beds, arranged into three inpatient areas: secure ("Pukatea"), including two seclusion rooms, a semi-secure area ("Kahikatea") for patients transitioning out of Pukatea, where patients can make use of an outside courtyard as well as more internal space, an open ward ("Kowhai"). There is also a day program ("Harakeke") that operates out of an adjacent area in the building. The unit is light, modern and as home-like as possible. Our aim is to support people in their recovery from severe mental illness to return to living in the community. We treat the full range of adult patients including older persons and addictions, as well as supporting youth while they await transfer to the Rangatahi Specialist Youth service which is based in Wellington. We work collaboratively with clinicians in other teams in the Mental Health and Addictions Service, as well as with specialist services based elsewhere in Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. Our team consists of staff from a wide variety of backgrounds who are skilled in supporting people who live with severe mental illnesses and their whanau.
