Conservator – Motat

As a Conservator, you will specialize in an area including, but not limited to, organics, metals, industrial heritage, or library and archive. You will report to the Head of Conservation and Collection Care and work alongside a team of passionate Conservators working on remedial treatments and preventative programs for a vast range of collection objects and materials. Key responsibilities include: Plan and carry out preventive measures and remedial conservation treatments to support new acquisitions, accessibility to MOTAT's collection, exhibition and storage requirements. Provide input for wider conservation and collection care planning and prioritization demonstrating time management skills. Carry out conservation and collection care programs such as IPM, environmental monitoring, handling, packing, and housing of collections. Conduct inventories and ordering of conservation supplies. To be successful in this role you will have: A relevant qualification in Conservation and at least 3 years of experience treating objects. Significant experience handling, packing, and moving museum collections or art objects. Experience carrying out IPM and environmental monitoring in collections. Ability to do precise work, taking a methodical approach. Understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti o Waitangi or willingness to learn is a must. Even better if you possess: Demonstrated ability to integrate a Te Ao Maori perspective and incorporate tikanga into museum practices; a willingness to learn is a must. Experience with Vernon Collection Management System would be advantageous. Experience in carrying out testing and research on objects and suitable materials for display including but not limited to; chemical analysis, materials technology, or art historical. Membership in a professional body for conservation such as NZCCM. At MOTAT, we are committed to preserving and sharing Aotearoa New Zealand's transport and technology history with the community.
