About the role This role is responsible for leading the operational delivery of our community maintenance team. You will be responsible for motivating and directing a team of four maintenance officers, including two seniors, who will be working out in the district to beautify our community spaces. You will develop service levels (in conjunction with management and communities) and quality work plans for the team, enabling them to efficiently and safely undertake maintenance tasks to a high standard. The role is also responsible for executing an effective internal charge-back scheme for cost recovery of services.
Key to this role will be a drive for continuous improvement. This is primarily an operational management role, whilst experience working on-the-tools is not a requirement, it would be advantageous to have a background as a landscaping manager or similar in order to assist the team in the field if required.
Responsibilities will include: Develop team members' proficiency on-the-tools and facilitate their professional development, while driving a collaborative, safety-first culture.Develop, update and implement standard operating procedures, effective traffic management plans, hazard identification processes and an asset register of tools and equipment.Manage budgets and expenditures effectively in line with Council guidelines.Ensure accurate team time recording and provide accurate cost estimating in order to operate an effective charge-back scheme.Continually review and optimize maintenance operations for efficiency, quality and safety.Carry out regular reporting on team activities.Our ideal candidate will: Demonstrate strong leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to motivate and develop the operational team.Facilitate effective communication and strong working relationships at all levels, both internally and externally.Be experienced in managing budgets and financials effectively.Possess excellent administration and computer skills, with high attention to detail.Have a team-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.About Council With 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island, The Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority.
