Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen to be a part of Te Whatu Ora Waikato, Hospital & Community Equity Directorate as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the WHIRI Programme. You will be involved in the development of new ways of working within the health care system affecting those with long term conditions, models of care that address inequities and support Maori and Pacific to access quality healthcare.

The Whanau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHIRI) is a kaupapa Maori model of care that supports whanau. It involves a collaborative approach that includes hospital services, Iwi, Maori and Pacific providers, community groups, and wider primary care. Waikato Hospital serves the largest Maori population and third largest Pacific people's population in the country. The WHIRI programme of work embraces Matauranga Maori and Te Ao Maori in order to be effective for our Maori communities and fulfil our Te Tiriti obligations.

Key responsibilities of the role:

Provide specialist nursing care and expertise
Researching, evaluating, developing and implementing standards
Leads development of pathways, protocols and guidelines
Provide educational support

Mou | About you
Must have:

Registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand; inclusive of scope of practice.
A current practising certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
Significant clinical experience, a minimum of five years.
Expert/Senior level of practice on the Professional Development and Recognition Programme.
Completed a postgraduate qualification or equivalent.


The ideal applicant will also have:

Understanding of Tikanga Maori, Te Ao Maori and Matauranga Maori and the ability to engage appropriately in Maori settings
A strong understanding of system drivers of health inequities
A strong advocate for improvement of Maori and Pacific health equity
Involvement in research, teaching, and innovation that has changed clinical practice.


Our team and kaupapa:
Te Whatu Ora Waikato plans, funds and provides health and disability support services to a population of more than 400,000. We run five hospitals across the district – a tertiary hospital in Hamilton, a secondary hospital in Thames, and three rural hospitals in Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, and Tokoroa.

Te Whatu Ora Waikato Hospital in Hamilton is one of New Zealand's largest tertiary, teaching hospitals with over 600 inpatient beds and 22 operating theatres. Clinical specialities include Women's and Children Services, Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oncology and Haematology, Surgical services, and Mental Health and Addiction. Waikato Hospital is the Midland regional referral centre for multiple specialties including trauma surgery, oncology, and neurology.

The Clinical Equity team is a Kaupapa Maori service that is committed to delivering positive health outcomes for the community that we serve.
