We are looking for a talented Civil Construction Engineer or Graduate Construction Engineer to join our well-respected Engineering team at Bay of Plenty Regional Council. This is an opportunity to use your engineering skills to work on some of the most challenging geological and physical floodplains in New Zealand or gain some great experience in doing so if you're a graduate looking for your next challenge!

Please note that we will only appoint to one role; Civil Construction Engineer or Graduate Construction Engineer which will be based on the relevant skills and experience the successful candidate has for the position. This role is located in Whakatane. It also requires you to take on flood management duties and to be on call for flood emergencies.
Te ahuatunga a te turanga | About the role Being a Civil Construction Engineer at Bay of Plenty Regional Council means being part of a committed and experienced team of professionals working on key engineering challenges, delivering our crucial community outcomes: a healthy environment, freshwater for life, safe and resilient communities, and a vibrant region.
As a Civil Construction Engineer you will;
Investigate, cost estimate, plan, tender, implement and supervise engineering contracts in accordance with Council and NZS3910 contract procedures. Investigate, design, draw and implement culvert renewals, capital construction projects such as stopbank upgrades and pump scheme upgrades as required to the appropriate standards. Maintain an extensive knowledge of engineering processes, construction, river and drainage management, contract administration, legislative requirements, trends and technologies. Develop engineering methodologies and approaches to solutions for river management and flood risk challenges. You will be required to work with our hapu, iwi, landowners and the wider community and develop, negotiate, and maintain close working relationships across the rohe to our many stakeholders. As a Graduate Construction Engineer you will;
Be expected to compile contracts, tender, and supervise engineering contracts in accordance with Council and NZS3910 contract procedures. Assist with engineering feasibility and design, survey, and engineering investigations. Produce construction drawings using computer-aided software and quantities schedules for construction projects. Your primary focus will be similar as those listed for the Civil Construction Engineer role while you work to increase and maintain your knowledge of construction management and engineering design processes relevant to our rivers and drainage engineering. Initial support will be available if you are still developing in this area. O pumanawa | Your skills and experience Qualifications: A recognised tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
Experience: At least five (5) years of demonstrated engineering experience managing civil construction works in New Zealand.
Technical skills:  Experience in planning, cost estimation and managing earthmoving, stopbank construction, subsoil drainage, riprap works, culvert installation and concreate structures would be advantageous to this role. The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding towards innovative and effective management approaches of rivers, canals, floodplains, pump schemes, lakes and coastal processes to reduce flood risk as well as a general understanding of environmental effects and New Zealand specific environmental regulations.
Experience with contract administration, including supervision of contractors and consultants is preferred. While the main emphasis of this role is on construction, the ideal candidate should possess the ability to handle civil design tasks using computer-aided software such as AutoCAD or 12d Model or alternatively, a strong willingness to train in this area would also be considered.
However, if you are a recent Engineering graduate with a relevant degree or diploma in engineering and you can demonstrate at least 1 years of relevant experience related to aspects of this role, drive, commitment and passion for your work. We also want to hear from you.
