Purpose of Role: To manage and lead a legal team in the provision of high-quality legal services to the Commission, supporting the General Counsel as a member of the Legal Services Branch Leadership Team, and to be an active member of the leadership team for the Partner branch.
Key Result Areas Leadership and Management: Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to develop individual and collective capability. Manage team members effectively on a day-to-day basis. Recruit and maintain a high level of expertise within the team. Foster a learning environment and create a sense of pride and belonging in the team. Contribute to the Legal Services Branch Leadership Team. Ensure priority areas in employee surveys are addressed. Be an effective role model and leader for team members. Encourage a positive health, safety, and wellbeing culture. Delivery of High-Quality Advice: Provide technical leadership and expert advice to the Partner Branch. Develop presentations and present legal opinions independently. Identify solutions to significant and complex legal issues. Oversee and review communication to project stakeholders. Lead the development of new methods, processes, and frameworks. Provide oversight and quality assurance of team advice. Proactive Leadership: Ensure the GM of the Partner Branch is kept updated on strategic matters. Integrate the work programme with the goals of the Partner Branch. Guide project teams in evaluating resolutions and recommendations. Management of Litigation: Act as a project sponsor and manage litigation processes. Ensure preparation of litigation budgets and progress updates. Manage litigation budgets in conjunction with project managers. Collaborative Leadership: Develop and maintain relationships of trust with senior management. Communicate effectively to support decision-making responsibilities. Foster trusted and effective working relationships across the Commission. Note: These responsibilities are not exhaustive and may change as necessary.
Person Specification Qualification: Undergraduate degree in law and Practising Certificate
Experience: Demonstrated legal experience at a senior level, leading and managing teams, and working within a project management framework.
Knowledge: Knowledge of relevant legislation, leadership principles, and the Commerce Commission's role and function.
