Practice Lead - Mainframe Development (PL/I) (Programming Language One / PLI)Location: New Zealand - AucklandEmployment Type: Full-timeAbout the Role:This position sits with our client, a major financial organisation recognised for its innovation and dedication to operational excellence. As they continue to modernise their critical systems, they are seeking a PLI (Programming Language 1) Practice Lead to manage and drive mainframe development projects while leading a remote team across India.While extensive PLI experience is highly desirable, we are open to candidates with a robust mainframe development background in technologies such as COBOL, RPG, z/OS, or Unix.Role Overview:The PLI Practice Lead will be responsible for delivering high-quality solutions, managing distributed teams, and ensuring the optimisation of mainframe systems. This role is ideal for a leader with significant experience in mainframe technologies and a passion for driving innovation within legacy systems.Key Responsibilities:Strategic Leadership:Define and implement a strategy for mainframe development aligned with organisational goals.Act as the technical lead for PLI projects, while supporting and mentoring team members with expertise in COBOL, RPG, and other mainframe technologies.Project Oversight:Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of applications using PLI, COBOL, or other mainframe programming languages.Ensure timely delivery of projects that meet quality and performance expectations.Team Management:Manage and lead a remote team of mainframe developers, fostering collaboration and productivity.Mentor team members in adopting best practices across different mainframe technologies.Stakeholder Collaboration:Work closely with business and technical stakeholders to ensure alignment with financial sector needs.Communicate technical solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.Innovation & Modernisation:Identify opportunities for modernising legacy systems and integrating innovative solutions.Develop and enforce standards, guidelines, and best practices for mainframe development.Requirements:Experience:10+ years of experience in mainframe development, including PLI, COBOL, RPG, z/OS, or Unix.3+ years in a leadership role managing distributed or remote teams.Technical Skills:Expertise in one or more mainframe technologies (e.g., PLI, COBOL, RPG).Strong understanding of mainframe operating systems such as z/OS and Unix.Familiarity with database systems like DB2 and batch processing.Leadership Skills:Proven ability to lead, mentor, and inspire diverse teams.Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in financial services or other highly regulated industries.Knowledge of mainframe modernisation strategies and hybrid systems.Certifications in mainframe technologies or project management (e.g., PMP, Agile).What We Offer:Competitive salary package.Opportunity to work with a prestigious financial organisation.Flexible and remote-friendly work environment.Career development and learning opportunities.How to Apply:If you have extensive experience in mainframe development, whether in PLI, COBOL, RPG, or other technologies, and are excited about leading transformative projects in the financial industry, we encourage you to apply.
