Job Summary The purpose of the Flight Operations Specialist – Cargo is a key member of the flight operations team, responsible for coordinating and managing all aspects of cargo operations within the airline's flight schedule.
This role ensures the efficient, safe, and compliant handling of cargo from acceptance through to loading and unloading during flight operations.
The specialist will work closely with cargo agents, flight crew, ground operations, and other departments to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of cargo.
Additionally, the role involves engaging with customer service, servicing clients, and liaising with freight forwarders to ensure a seamless cargo experience.
Your activities Oversee daily cargo operations, including loading, unloading, and transport coordination for scheduled flights.Ensure compliance with safety protocols, weight distribution, and cargo securing requirements.Serve as the main liaison between flight crews, ground handlers, and other departments to ensure smooth cargo handling.Monitor real-time flight schedules and adjust operations in response to delays or disruptions.
Provide OH&S oversight and guidance, creating a positive safety culture that includes strong safety reporting and "Just Culture" that aims for being a generative safety culture.Ensure compliance with company and client procedures and regulations.Supervise cargo handling staff, ensuring efficient performance and adherence to operational standards.Conduct training sessions for new employees and provide ongoing development for the team.
Monitor, manage and report on Airport performance, analysing Airport scorecards, proactively identifying operational weakness and implementing corrective strategies.Oversee the accurate completion of cargo-related documentation (e.g., air waybills, manifests, customs forms).Prepare and submit regular operational reports, highlighting performance metrics and issues.Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to cargo discrepancies, delays, damage, or misrouted shipments.Implement corrective actions and ensure timely communication with stakeholders.Support and oversee new projects and initiatives and the introduction of new products and services.Lead and coach the team effectively, fostering a positive culture and actively managing individual performance, including escalated staff grievances, complaints, and discipline.Ensure cargo is handled in compliance with safety guidelines, particularly for hazardous materials and high-risk shipments.Lead investigations into any incidents or safety breaches, taking appropriate corrective measures.Monitor cargo volumes and forecast operational needs, ensuring the proper allocation of resources to meet demand.Your profile Minimum of 3 years of experience in flight operations or cargo handling, preferably in the aviation or logistics industry.Experience with cargo management systems (e.g., Cargospot, SkyChain) and flight operations software is preferred.Ability to demonstrate high level personal qualities in relation to adaptability, flexibility, and commitment.Experience in Import and Export Air Cargo handling and administration.Must hold and maintain a current forklift license.Hold an IATA Dangerous Goods Air certification to complete dangerous goods checks and sign off on approvals/rejections (preferable).Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and time management skills.Lead a culture that values equality, fairness, transparency, and zero tolerance for bullying, discrimination, and harassment.What we offer Permanent Full-Time position.Competitive remuneration.Opportunities for career advancement.Accrual of annual and personal leave.Comprehensive training and ongoing support provided.At Swissport, we believe in diversity, equal opportunity, and the power of our values to drive our success.
