Dunedin has some large building projects taking place such as the new Dunedin Hospital. In addition, our heritage buildings are being revitalised, commercial buildings are being upgraded and earthquake strengthening projects are underway. The Building Services business unit provides guidance, approval, inspection and monitoring services relating to building consent applications received and granted each year to ensure compliance with the Building Act and Regulations.
The Opportunity
This role is suited to people with limited trade experience and/or have only recently attained a suitable building construction, building surveying or architectural qualification. Training will be provided to enable the Cadet/Graduate officers to become a future Building Consent (Processing) Officer, normally within five years (subject to vacancy). During the training period, you will have exposure to most areas of Building Services and deliver a core activity of lodging and checking building consent applications.
Applicants with trade experience only will be required to attain a suitable qualification. Where the Council funds the qualification, you will be financially bonded during and for two years post attainment.
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have many of the following:
A building construction, building surveying or architectural qualification at or above NZQA level 6
A minimum of 12 months experience or knowledge in construction, plumbing and drainage or architecture within New Zealand
An attention to detail and accuracy
Organised and can methodically deal with a variety of tasks at the same time.
Effective communication skills verbally and in writing
Ability to research, study and use office technology
Customer focus; ability to balance customer service within a regulatory framework
