Details of the offer

Join our small but passionate team at the Karearea Falcon Trust to help with morning butchery tasks - gutting and preparing meat/small game animals into portions the right size for karearea (New Zealand falcons).
The karearea is a taonga (treasured) species unique to New Zealand and found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, there are less than 8000 karearea left, making them rarer than some species of kiwi! We work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and breed-for-release karearea in order to boost wild populations and help ensure a thriving future for them. We currently have 18 karearea in our care at the centre who require specialist carnivorous diets for their health and wellbeing.
Local hunters generously supply us with meat suitable for falcons including: rabbit, hare, ducks, pukeko, geese, swans, quail, and pheasants.
We are looking to grow our small team of volunteer butchers that can safely prepare food for the falcons on weekday mornings.
Tasks will include:
Gutting and butchering meat into portions (skinning / plucking is not required as falcons need the "roughage" for digestion) Identifying gun shot wounds and removing hazardous pellets/shot from carcasses Maintaining safety standards through correct knife handing Cleaning and sanitizing the food prep areas after use Prior experience with knife safety, butchery, and food hygiene is extremely advantageous.
However, full training will be given so the less experienced are welcome to apply.... provided you are not squeamish!
As a charity we rely on volunteers, grants, donations, sponsorship and the community to help support our work restoring wild karearea.
Thank you for taking the time to review our volunteer opportunity and we hope to receive your application soon.
