With strong commercial investment in the city, a rising housing market and continued growth, Upper Hutt City Building Team is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual to join our expanding Building Control Services team. We are committed to customer service and need someone who can assist our customers in facilitating development in Upper Hutt while ensuring that building projects comply with legislative requirements and standards.
As a Building Control Officer – Inspections, you will play an important role within the Building Control Services team to ensure the Council's responsibilities under the Building Act 2004 and related legislation are met. Your primary responsibility will be to undertake building inspections. Additionally, you will have responsibilities across all aspects of building control including managing cases, projects and/or processes associated with compliance and enforcement matters, processing applications, administration (including BCA accreditation requirements), responding to customer enquiries and interacting with other Council teams.
You will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and information databases in support of the Council's continued status as an accredited Building Control Authority. Cumulatively your work alongside the wider team will help to transform our city.
Ideally you will have:
An appropriate qualification in building or a design-related field that will be recognised by Regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006
A relevant technical and/or trade qualification and be willing to work towards a Regulation 18 qualification.
Recent and relevant experience in the building industry and familiarity with construction methods, materials, and systems.
Understanding of risk management principles as they apply to construction and building safety.
Knowledge of inspection processes, documentation requirements, and reporting standards.
A sound knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code and other relevant legislation as it relates to the building industry.
Ability to interpret building plans, maps, and other graphical materials associated with development proposals.
Effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, with a capacity to quickly learn and adapt to new computer programs.
An ability to confidently and clearly communicate technical issues and concepts;
Excellent customer service focus, including good listening skills;
Good administration and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads to meet statutory deadlines;
A current driver's licence.
