Nga kawenga |About the role Offender Employment (OE) is all about giving people in prison the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release. Now is an exciting time to join us as a Building/Carpentry Instructor at Rolleston Prison construction yard.
There are so many facets to this role, from facilitating adult learning and on-job training, to building new homes from ground up for Kainga Ora, and forging relationships across the department and within the wider community.
The training you provide will enable others to achieve NZQA qualifications linked to construction industry related training organisations. In providing a platform of good working habits to take forward to the future, you will further support rehabilitation and reintegration practices. The role also provides occasional support to the wider Offender Employment operation as part of the internal services team.
Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses. This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.
The hours of work will be on a standard shift basis of 80 hours per fortnight, Monday to Friday, 0730hrs – 1530hrs.Working public holidays, along with the possibility of some overtime or callouts, may be required.
We are interested in hearing from people who possess:
Proven experience in the construction industry with a focus in building/carpentry.A relevant trade qualification and registration as a LBP required (or an ability to rapidly obtain the LBP registration).Proven record of refurbishment and new build projects.Outstanding health and safety practices.Exceptional communication skills and the ability to develop effective relationships.The ability to motivate and harness the talents of people within a team environment.Experience as an adult educator or NZAQ assessor (4098) is an advantage.A full NZ driver licence (or be eligible to obtain one)The later stages of the recruitment process involve pre-employment checks including a drug test, medical test, physical assessment and police vetting. The starting salary for this role is $67, 514 - $75, 876 per annum.Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role. Once in the role, there are opportunities to increase your salary over time up to $83, 191.
