Since its establishment in 1905 the Department of Physiology has grown to become one of the largest Departments in the University, being home to approximately 100 staff.
We make major contributions to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of students in science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical lab sciences, nutrition, and physical education.
The Department is internationally known for its outstanding contribution to new knowledge in various physiological areas (e.g. neurophysiology, cell physiology and cardiovascular physiology) and has a strong track record for being successful with the acquisition of highly competitive overhead-funded research grants.The role/Te mahi
As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will perform research in a biomedical research laboratory for the project "The CALCRL receptor: A new genetic determinant of diabetic kidney disease in NZ" under the supervision of Associate Professor Martin Fronius.
Research for this project is part of a contract for a Health Research Council funded project.
In this role you will work in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and a collaborative team across departments to successfully complete the project to characterise the effect of a genetic receptor variant on artery function.
This includes:

Tracking breeding and genotyping of rat colony.
Setting up pressure myography system.
Performing pressure myography experiments to evaluate arterial responsiveness.
Analysing pressure myography data.
Attending meetings to present research outcomes to a collaborative team.

Your skills and experience/Ka pukeka me ka wheako
Successful candidates will have:

A BSc Honours or MSc degree in physiology or relevant related field.
3 years of laboratory experience desirable.
Experience with animal research (e.g. euthanasia and tissue dissection for ex vivo experiments of rats).
Experience with cardiovascular research, preferably techniques to assess vessel function in vitro (e.g. pressure myography, wire myography).
Attention to detail and an accurate and meticulous work ethic.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
Organisational and time management skills.
Effective communication skills.

This is a part time (0.5 FTE), fixed term position for 5 months (1 February – 30 June 2025), located in Dunedin.
Working hours are flexible and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate step on the Assistant Research Fellow salary scale, based on skills, experience and qualifications. The salary range for an Assistant Research Fellow is $58,341 to $78,731 pro rata.
