About Aquatic Survival Skills Trust:
Our Mission - To provide comprehensive, free water safety education to all children in the Bay of Plenty.
Our Purpose - To equip children with essential water safety skills ensuring our community can safely enjoy our diverse range of water environments.
The Aquatic Survival Skills Trust board of directors have a rich history in diverse aquatic environments. They each bring their own strengths and passion to the program.
We also provide the 'Kaiako led' Initiative the national program from Water Safety New Zealand.
Aquatic Survival Skills provides schools with:
Ongoing support from a dedicated Educator
Tuition in the classroom and pool
School resource kit
Teacher in-service training workshop
3 x 60min classroom sessions
2 x 30min pool sessions
For children years 5 & 6
4 x 30min Teacher support around the pool
For children years 0-8
The role involves:
Supporting school teachers at school pools and classrooms to deliver Aquatic Survival Skills, including model teaching, sharing ideas for class management and skill development.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate and interact effectively with teachers and students that have a diverse range of cultures, ages, abilities and needs.
Engage with children and teachers to create a fun learning environment.
Deliver the key elements of the programme but adapt to changing environments/contexts.
Be a positive role model and ambassador for water safety.
Have an outgoing personality and exceptional communication skills.
Demonstrate the ability to learn and utilise resources.
Be willing to share new ideas and resources to help improve the program.
Commit to and attend training sessions/team meetings from time to time.
Be available between 8:30am – 3:30pm during term time.
Work independently and within a team environment.
Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of swimming, water safety, surf lifesaving or other open water skills.
Previous experience as a teacher, swim coach or lifesaver, coastguard etc. would be an advantage, but training will be provided.
Understanding of the school context.
Swimming New Zealand qualifications or knowledge of Water Skills for Life competencies would be an advantage.
Proven ability to communicate confidently and clearly with children and adults alike.
Proven ability to work in and communicate well in multicultural contexts.
Experience in assessing adults and children; however, training will be provided.
Personal Specifications:
Clear and confident communication skills (children and adults).
Enthusiastic Educator with a commitment and passion for water safety.
Sense of humour and positive approach to engage with all people.
Always seeking to improve yourself to be the best you can as an educator.
Punctual and reliable.
Physically fit and able to lift wet gear (lifejackets, etc.).
Have your own transport and current driver's license.
Eligible to work in New Zealand.
Required to be police vetted.
Prerequisites:
First Aid certificate level 1 (This can be done as part of your training module).
